Artist’s Statement
Alison Collins (https://alisoncollins.org/) is an artist and educator living and working in The Bronx in New York City. In her 30 years of creative work, she has embraced themes of time, memory, pattern, and transformation. Her installations and discrete sculpture reflect upon the impermanence of the body, the beauty of the forgotten, and the perpetual recreation of memory. Shiny and robust steel sculptures of her early work have turned to rust. She is a gleaner gathering remnants of rust, hair, and miniscule mica chips of imagery found in texts of the poet and novelist. All are collected and transformed: Rust and hair become text and, in turn, text becomes patterned arabesques of reconstructed memory.
