I knew Lewis for about 40 years. When he and his wife/partner Bernadette Mayer would have parties in their home I would go. I attended every one of his readings. He published a book of mine, Political Conditions / Physical States. Once when I received $5,000 as a grant from the fund for poetry, I knew as a recipient of SSD/SSI I would have to return half the money over to the government. I had very little money at the time. I signed the check over to Lewis. He cashed it and gave me the money. I also attended a workshop of his at The Poetry Project about how to run a poetry magazine.
