This issue of Boog’s first zine, number seven of ManAlive!/MA!, was our first instantzine. I was presenting a paper (From Bebop to Desktop: Fringe Literature from the Beat Generation to the Zine Community, an excerpt on Hettie Jones and Yugen of which is included in this zine) at NYU’s The Beat Generation: Legacy and Celebration Conference in May 1994. I offered to run a workshop on how to make a zine, and they instead suggested I make one documenting the event and that they would fund it.
So I gathered work over the first few days from some of the folks in and around the festival, including Allen Ginsberg, who provided a holograph poem for the cover (like he did for the first issue of MA! in 1992) that Madeleine Hope (Meg) Arthurs combined with one of her drawings, and the first piece Brad Will ever did for Boog, among other great work. It came out during the final days of the event, and it’s been out of print since the year it was released. Enjoy. —David A. Kirschenbaum
